Frequently Asked Questions

What kinds of whales can we see in Southern California?
Southern California is one of the best whale-watching regions in the world. Depending on the season, you may spot gray whales, blue whales, humpback whales, fin whales, and minke whales — along with dolphins, sea lions, and seabirds.
When is the best time of year to go whale watching?
Whale watching runs year-round. Gray whales are most common from December through April, while blue and humpback whales are frequently seen from May through November.
How long is the whale watching trip?
Most whale watching cruises last approximately 2 to 2.5 hours. This gives the captain ample time to search for wildlife and maximize your chances of sightings.
Do you guarantee whale sightings?
While whales are wild animals and sightings can’t be guaranteed, Newport Landing has a very high success rate thanks to experienced captains and daily reports from other vessels. Many trips also encounter large pods of dolphins, even when whales are elusive.
Is whale watching safe for kids and families?
Absolutely! Whale watching is family-friendly and safe for all ages. Life jackets are provided, and crew members are always available to help guests feel comfortable onboard.
Will I get seasick?
Everyone’s tolerance is different. The open ocean can have movement, so guests prone to motion sickness may want to take preventative medication beforehand and eat lightly prior to boarding.
Can I bring food or drinks onboard?
Outside food is generally allowed, but alcohol policies vary. Some boats offer snacks or beverages for purchase onboard. Please check trip details before your cruise.
Where does the whale watching tour depart from?
Whale watching cruises depart from Newport Harbor in Newport Beach, conveniently located near restaurants, shops, and waterfront views.
How early should I arrive before departure?
Plan to arrive at least 30 minutes prior to departure to allow time for parking, check-in, and boarding.
